Type of Name:

Last name

Language:

Greek

Meaning:

Unknown

Additional Information:

There is dispute within my family over how to pronounce our last name - my father and I use "j aa - N EE T - oh s", but some of my uncles and cousins use "j aa - N EY T - oh s" or "j aa - N EH T - oh s", the disagreement being over the middle vowel. When my great-grandfather came to America from Arcadia, Greece in 1917, the pronunciation was possibly changed so as to fit American conventions of spelling and pronunciation better - the original Greek may have used the "ey" or "eh" sound, while the modern pronunciation should use the "ee" sound. I do not know how to contact whatever extended family of mine (if I have any) that still lives in Greece - otherwise, I'd ask them questions about the etymology
