Pronunciation of Camellia in UK

Camellia should be pronounced "camellia" with the accent on the "mell" and not "cameelia" which is in common use. The word originates from the name of a German botanist in the 1700s - Georg Joseph Kamel. However, he wrote to an English naturalist, John Ray, and signed himself "G-J.Camelus" and John Ray then referred to him as Father Camelus. The Swedish botanist Linnaeus, commemorated the work of this skillful priest by publishing the generic name "camellia" in 1735. Hence the two pronunciations Camellia and Cameelia.
