Pronunciation of Piguenit in Tasmania

The way the name has been pronounced here in Tasmania, where I live and was born is :
pee - jer - nay.

It's just that a famous colonial artist here, born here in fact, Piguenit - eighteenth century - is thus referred to.

Myself and others wonder if this old pronunciation we use is correct however. It's supposedly how he himself used it. This may of course be untrue, although it's come to me through my great-grandparents.

A Spanish chap told me recently it would be pronounced, in their language, Pee -ger- nay. It seems to have spanish roots
