Pronunciation of Maurer in Pittman, PA, USA

   Slow

Ma ra

like the ma in Ma and Pa Kettle
and the ra like the ru in the word ruff

with just a hint of an r at the end of Ma like in the word bear as it would be pronouced by Davy Crockett or like the planet Mars without the zizz sound

Or almost exactly like the Italian name Marra but with a miniscule soft v sound preceeding the first r.

I guess that for those who know how to pronounce it that made things a lot clearer and for those who suspected they didn't really know how to pronounce their own name correctly, it confused them even more.

Pronunciation of Maurer

It is pronounced Mar ra by native Germans just like Jim Lehrer from the McNeil Lehrer News Hour that used to run on PBS pronounced his name every night at the end of the show Jim Lehra. To my ear that is how the authentic pronunciation of the surname Maurer sounds, almost Italian sounding -- Marra. Of course the part of Germany that is most heavily infested with Maurers was frequently part of France. Perhaps this affected the local sound of it
