Lampe is pronounced as: Phonetic Spelling:[ l ae m p ee ]

l ae m p ee
let at me pet see

Type of Name:

Last name

Language:

German

Meaning:

Lamp, light, "lamp-maker"

Additional Information:

This is my family name. My great grandparents emigrated from Germany to the U.S. pre-WWII. I've talked to other people with the same surname in the States, and about 50/50 pronounce the long "e" sound, and some keep it silent. However, people with the name Lampe in Germany definitely pronounce the "e".

I imagine the U.S. pronunciation is a relic from the days of Ellis island employees fast-tracking the immigration process. The name was probably originally pronounced more similarly to "Nietzche," as in "KNEE"-"chuh", so it'd be like "LAMB"-"puh". But that'd be hard to pronounce for Americans I guess, so people decided to either simplify it to a long "e" sound instead of a short "e" sound, or just drop the "e" altogether to make things easy.
